Black Grouse

A very elusive but striking species that is present all year. The males display at a 'lek', which is where they dance to attract females. They lek at dawn during April and May. The male has a very distinct 'bubbling and hissing' call, which can carry over a good distance on a still morning. A good lek site will have maybe 20 or 30 males displaying and 'bubbling' together. Here at Vyrnwy we only have leks of one or two males. The male has a distinct 'lyre' shaped tail and striking white wingbars seen in flight. Much work is being done on habitat management to help this species to make a recovery in Wales, as the population has greatly diminished over recent years. There is also a voluntary shooting ban on this species by shooting estates, as everyone realises the danger this species is in.
