Redstart

Arrives in April to nest in the oakwoods of western Britain. It is particularly fond of the older woodlands where large mature trees provide much food. This species also uses the nestboxes provided in the oak woodlands across the reserve. The male is a striking mix of crimson and grey with a silver patch on the top of it's head, whist the female is the usual brown, but as their name suggests both sexes have a striking red tail seen best in flight. They have a characteristic 'flicking' movement when stood on a perch. In a good year 60-70 pairs can be found across the reserve. The nestbox young of this species are also ringed by the British Trust for Ornithology. It leaves in September for wintering grounds in Africa.
