| Wood Warbler
Arrives in April in the oak woodlands. It prefers woods in the west of Britain with a closed canopy and little or no understorey. This bird, despite spending a lot of time up in the woodland canopy delivering it's silvery trilling song, actually nests on the floor. The nest is domed and unlined. Their main food source is the caterpillars found in abundance on oak trees. Up to 60 territory holding males have been recorded across the reserve in any one year. Despite being a bird traditionally of deciduous woodland, they have been found more recently in larch woodland and in conifer plantations where there are clumps of beech trees present. It leaves in August and travels, via Italy, to it's wintering grounds in eastern and central Africa. |
